Vida Scudder, 1890s

Vida Scudder
Vida Dutton Scudder was born on December 15, 1861, the child of Congregationalist missionaries in India. In the 1870s, Vida and her mother were confirmed in the Episcopal Church by Bishop Phillips Brooks. After studying English literature at Smith College and Oxford University, Scudder began teaching at Wellesley College. Her love of scholarship was matched by her social conscience and deep spirituality. As a young woman, Scudder founded the College Settlements Association, joined the Society of Christian Socialists, and began her lifelong association with the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross in 1889, a community living in the world and devoted to intercessory prayer.
In 1893, Scudder took a leave of absence from Wellesley to work with Helena Stuart Dudley to found Denison House in Boston. Stresses from teaching and her activism led to a breakdown in 1901. After two years’ recuperation in Italy, she returned renewed and became even more active in church and socialist groups; she started a group for Italian immigrants at Denison House and took an active part in organizing the Women’s Trade Union League. In 1911, Scudder founded the Episcopal Church Socialist League, and formally joined the Socialist party. Her support of the Lawrence, Massachusetts, textile workers’ strike in 1912 drew a great deal of criticism and threatened her teaching position. Though she initially supported World War I, she joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation in 1923, and by the 1930s was a firm pacifist.
Throughout her life Scudder’s primary relationships and support network were women. After retirement, she authored 16 books on religious and political subjects, combining her intense activism with an equally vibrant spirituality. “If prayer is the deep secret creative force that Jesus tells us it is, we should be very busy with it,” she wrote characteristically, adding that there was one sure way “of directly helping on the Kingdom of God. That way is prayer. Social intercession may be the mightiest force in the world.” Vida Scudder died on October 9, 1954. HWHM

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be consoled.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall have their fill. Matthew 5

Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires, known,
and from whom no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth will declare your praise.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to you, O Christ, Alleluia!

Refrain:
I, your Lord and Master,
now become your servant.
I who made the moon and stars
will kneel to wash your feet.
This is my commandment:
to love as I have loved you.
Kneel to wash each other’s feet
as I have done for you.

1 All the world will know
you are my disciples
by the love that you offer,
the kindness you show.
You have heard the voice of God
in the words that I have spoken.
You beheld heaven’s glory
and have seen the face of God. [Refrain]

2 I must leave you now
only for a moment.
I must go to my Father
to make you a home.
On the day of my return,
I will come to take you with me
to the place I have promised
where your joy will have no end. [Refrain]

3 I am like a vine,
you are like the branches.
If you cling to my teaching
you surely will live.
If you make your home in me,
I will come to dwell within you.
You can count on my mercy
when you ask for what you need. [Refrain]

4 I have called you friends,
now no longer servants.
What I told you in secret,
the world longs to know.
There can be no greater love
than to give your life for others.
As the Father has loved me,
so I love you as my own. [Refrain]

5 You will weep for now
while the world rejoices.
But the tears of your sorrow
will soon turn to joy.
As a mother cries in childbirth
and her pain is turned to gladness,
you will know great rejoicing
on the day of my return. [Refrain]

6 I will give you peace;
this will be my blessing.
Though the world churns around you,
I leave you my peace.
I have told you all these things
that my peace may dwell within you.
Let your faith be unshaken
and your hope be ever strong. [Refrain]

Psalm 47 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/sk7c3h7)
1  Clap your hands together, all ye people *
 O sing unto God with the voice of melody.
2  For the Lord is high, and to be feared *
 he is the great King upon all the earth.
3  He shall subdue the people under us *
 and the nations under our feet.
4  He shall choose out an heritage for us *
 even the worship of Jacob, whom he loved.
5  God is gone up with a merry noise *
 and the Lord with the sound of the trump.
6  O sing praises, sing praises unto our God *
 O sing praises, sing praises unto our King.
7  For God is the King of all the earth *
 sing ye praises with understanding.
8  God reigneth over the heathen *
 God sitteth upon his holy seat.
9  The princes of the people are joined
unto the people of the God of Abraham *
 for God, which is very high exalted,
doth defend the earth, as it were with a shield.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 48 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/rhcanfm)
1  Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised *
 in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill.
2  The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth *
 upon the north-side lieth the city of the great King;
God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge.
3  For lo, the kings of the earth *
 are gathered, and gone by together.
4  They marvelled to see such things *
 they were astonished, and suddenly cast down.
5  Fear came there upon them, and sorrow *
 as upon a woman in her travail.
6  Thou shalt break the ships of the sea *
 through the east-wind.
7  Like as we have heard, so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God *
 God upholdeth the same for ever.
8  We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God *
 in the midst of thy temple.
9  O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world’s end *
 thy right hand is full of righteousness.
10  Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughter of Judah be glad *
 because of thy judgements.
11  Walk about Sion, and go round about her *
 and tell the towers thereof.
12  Mark well her bulwarks, set up her houses *
 that ye may tell them that come after.
13  For this God is our God for ever and ever *
 he shall be our guide unto death.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 49 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/v8qpz99)
1  O hear ye this, all ye people *
 ponder it with your ears, all ye that dwell in the world;
2  High and low, rich and poor *
 one with another.
3  My mouth shall speak of wisdom *
 and my heart shall muse of understanding.
4  I will incline mine ear to the parable *
 and shew my dark speech upon the harp.
5  Wherefore should I fear in the days of wickedness *
 and when the wickedness of my heels compasseth me round about?
6  There be some that put their trust in their goods *
 and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.
7  But no man may deliver his brother *
 nor make agreement unto God for him;
8  For it cost more to redeem their souls *
 so that he must let that alone for ever;
9  Yea, though he live long *
 and see not the grave.
10  For he seeth that wise men also die, and perish together *
 as well as the ignorant and foolish, and leave their riches for other.
11  And yet they think that their houses shall continue for ever *
 and that their dwelling-places shall endure
from one generation to another;
and call the lands after their own names.
12  Nevertheless, man will not abide in honour *
 seeing he may be compared unto the beasts that perish;
this is the way of them.
13  This is their foolishness *
 and their posterity praise their saying.
14  They lie in the hell like sheep, death gnaweth upon them,
and the righteous shall have domination over them in the morning *
 their beauty shall consume in the sepulchre out of their dwelling.
15  But God hath delivered my soul from the place of hell *
 for he shall receive me.
16  Be not thou afraid, though one be made rich *
 or if the glory of his house be increased ;
17  For he shall carry nothing away with him when he dieth *
 neither shall his pomp follow him.
18  For while he lived, he counted himself an happy man *
 and so long as thou doest well unto thyself,
men will speak good of thee.
19  He shall follow the generation of his fathers *
 and shall never see light.
20  Man being in honour hath no understanding *
 but is compared unto the beasts that perish.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 47 (Plainsong: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-47.mp3)
1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; *
shout to God with a cry of joy.
2 For the LORD Most High is to be feared; *
he is the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdues the peoples under us, *
and the nations under our feet.
4 He chooses our inheritance for us, *
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
5 God has gone up with a shout, *
the LORD with the sound of the ram’s-horn.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; *
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is King of all the earth; *
sing praises with all your skill.
8 God reigns over the nations; *
God sits upon his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the peoples have gathered together *
with the people of the God of Abraham.
10 The rulers of the earth belong to God, *
and he is highly exalted.

Psalm 48 (Plainsong: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-48.mp3)
1 Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; *
in the city of our God is his holy hill.
2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, *
the very center of the world and the city of the great King.
3 God is in her citadels; *
he is known to be her sure refuge.
4 Behold, the kings of the earth assembled *
and marched forward together.
5 They looked and were astounded; *
they retreated and fled in terror.
6 Trembling seized them there; *
they writhed like a woman in childbirth,
like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.
7 As we have heard, so have we seen,
in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; *
God has established her for ever.
8 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, *
in the midst of your temple.
9 Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world’s end; *
your right hand is full of justice.
10 Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, *
because of your judgments.
11 Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about her; *
count the number of her towers.
12 Consider well her bulwarks; examine her strongholds; *
that you may tell those who come after.
13 This God is our God for ever and ever; *
he shall be our guide for evermore.

Psalm 49 (Setting by Karl Kohlhase https://tinyurl.com/6zxc3suh)
Hear this, all people, give ear, all who dwell on the earth;
Both the high and the low, both the rich and the poor
My mouth shall sound forth with wisdom,
the thoughts of my heart with understanding
I’ll incline my ear to a proverb,
and solve my riddle to the music of a harp
Why should I fear in times of trouble,
with all the sins of my foes all around me?

Men who trust in their wealth,
who boast in the surplus of their riches
No man can ransom his brother,
or give God the price of His life
For the ransom of his life is too costly,
that he should always live and never see the Pit
But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol

For since even wise men will die,
so the fool and the ignorant perish
Leaving their wealth all to others,
though they thought that their homes were forever
Their dwelling for all generations;
they called earthly lands by their names
But no man abides in his boasting;
like the beasts of the earth he shall die
But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol

This is the fate of the foolish,
and of all who approve of their words
As sheep that are led to Sheol,
with Death leading them as their shepherd
The upright shall reign in the morning,
while their form is consumed by Sheol
So they shall be left with no dwelling,
But God will ransom my  soul
Yes God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol

Fret not for those who get rich,
though the wealth of his house is increasing
For he’ll carry nothing when he dies,
and his wealth will not go down with him
Though while he lived he blessed himself,
and was praised for all his success
He shall go to the place of his fathers,
who will never again see the light
But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol
Yes, God will ransom my soul and receive me

PRAYER

God our helper, hear our prayer
and uphold your church in times of testing.
Deliver us from evil,
so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
we may offer you our sacrifice of praise;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen. BCW

THE WORD OF GOD

When the people complained intensely in the Lord’s hearing, the Lord heard and became angry. Then the Lord’s fire burned them and consumed the edges of the camp. When the people cried out to Moses, Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire subsided. The name of that place was called Taberah, because the Lord’s fire burned against them.

The riffraff among them had a strong craving. Even the Israelites cried again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for free, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. Now our lives are wasting away. There is nothing but manna in front of us.”

The manna was like coriander seed and its color was like resin. The people would roam around and collect it and grind it with millstones or pound it in a mortar. Then they would boil it in pots and make it into cakes. It tasted like cakes baked in olive oil. When the dew fell on the camp during the night, the manna would fall with it.

Moses heard the people crying throughout their clans, each at his tent’s entrance. The Lord was outraged, and Moses was upset. Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? And why haven’t I found favor in your eyes, for you have placed the burden of all these people on me? Did I conceive all these people? Did I give birth to them, that you would say to me, ‘Carry them at the breast, as a nurse carries an unweaned child,’ to the fertile land that you promised their ancestors? Where am I to get meat for all these people? They are crying before me and saying, ‘Give us meat, so we can eat.’ I can’t bear this people on my own. They’re too heavy for me. If you’re going to treat me like this, please kill me. If I’ve found favor in your eyes, then don’t let me endure this wretched situation.”

1 Children of the heav’nly Father
safely in his bosom gather.
Nestling bird nor star in heaven
such a refuge e’er was given.

2 God his own doth tend and nourish,
in his holy courts they flourish.
From all evil things he spares them,
in his mighty arms he bears them.

3 Neither life nor death shall ever
from the Lord his children sever.
Unto them his grace he showeth,
and their sorrows all he knoweth.

4 Though he giveth or he taketh,
God his children ne’er forsaketh.
His the loving purpose solely
to preserve them safe and holy.

But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction. All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, but all are treated as righteous freely by his grace because of a ransom that was paid by Christ Jesus. Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before, during the time of God’s patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous.

What happens to our bragging? It’s thrown out. With which law? With what we have accomplished under the Law? No, not at all, but through the law of faith. We consider that a person is treated as righteous by faith, apart from what is accomplished under the Law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t God the God of Gentiles also? Yes, God is also the God of Gentiles. Since God is one, then the one who makes the circumcised righteous by faith will also make the one who isn’t circumcised righteous through faith. Do we then cancel the Law through this faith? Absolutely not! Instead, we confirm the Law.

1 O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hands hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed;

Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior-God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

2 When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; [Refrain]

3 And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross my burden gladly bearing
he bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain]

4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration

Jesus said, “If the world hates you, know that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, I have chosen you out of the world, and you don’t belong to the world. This is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you, ‘Servants aren’t greater than their master.’ If the world harassed me, it will harass you too. If it kept my word, it will also keep yours. The world will do all these things to you on account of my name, because it doesn’t know the one who sent me.”
