1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength;

from my enemies whose strength I could not match.
19 They assailed me in the day of my misfortune,
but the Lord was my support.

People unknown to me served me:

Foreign nations came to me cringing:

Praised be the God who saves me,
48 the God who gives me redress
and subdues people under me.
49 You saved me from my furious foes.
You set me above my assailants.
You saved me from violent men,
50 so I will praise you, Lord, among the nations:
I will sing a psalm to your name.
51 He has given great victories to his king
and shown his love for his anointed,
for David and his sons for ever.

PRAYER
Praise to you, God of our salvation.
You come to our help and set us free.
May your strength be our shield
and your word, our lamp,

THE WORD OF GOD
If only you would tear open the heavens and come down!
Mountains would quake before you
like fire igniting brushwood or making water boil.
If you would make your name known to your enemies,
the nations would tremble in your presence.
When you accomplished wonders beyond all our expectations;
when you came down, mountains quaked before you.
From ancient times,
no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any god but you
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him!
You look after those who gladly do right;
they will praise you for your ways.
But you were angry when we sinned;
you hid yourself when we did wrong.
We have all become like the unclean;
all our righteous deeds are like a menstrual rag.
All of us wither like a leaf;
our sins, like the wind, carry us away.
No one calls on your name;
no one bothers to hold on to you,
for you have hidden yourself from us,
and have handed us over to our sin.
But now, Lord, you are our father.
We are the clay, and you are our potter.
All of us are the work of your hand.
Don’t rage so fiercely, Lord;

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus. That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of knowledge, in the same way that the testimony about Christ was confirmed with you. The result is that you aren’t missing any spiritual gift while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also confirm your testimony about Christ until the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and you were called by him to partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

For the Church: that we may be awake to life each day, roused from sleep-waking through life, and freed from avoidance of issues
For patience during this Advent season each of us: that we may discover God’s word in every sound that touches our ears, God’s touch in every human embrace, and God’s love in every gesture of self-sacrifice among us
For greater attentiveness: that our minds and hearts may be focused upon the tasks we do, the people we love, and the God whom we serve today
For greater awareness: that the Spirit will guide us to reflection and recognition of all the thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams that are planted deep within our hearts
For those who have wandered from their relationship with God: that the memories and hopes of this season will open a doorway to God who loves them
For world leaders: that they may take the long view of human history and choose to protect and promote life and peace for all people rather than their reputation
For all who are suffering from violence, famine, persecution, or neglect: that God will destroy the bonds that hold them and open the doors of mercy and compassion for them
For all who are seeking employment: that God will open new opportunities to use their gifts and provide for themselves and their loved ones
For all who are awaiting the birth of a child: that God will bless these expectant parents, fill their hearts with love and acceptance, and help their children to grow and mature
For all refugees, immigrants, and displaced persons who are awaiting a new home or a return to their home: that God will give them patience and guide lawmakers in developing policies to address these issues
For all who are being persecuted for their religious or political beliefs: that God will give them courage and relieve their suffering
For all who are ill: that God will heal the sick, give strength to those who care for them, and guide all who are working on vaccines
For all who are traveling this weekend: that God will protect them on their way and bring them safely to their destinations
14. For all who must wait: that God will strengthen and comfort all who are waiting with the sick, those awaiting a diagnosis, those separated from loved ones, and those who are held unjustly
15. For healing of our nation: that God will heal the wounds of the political campaigns, restore civil dialogue, and help us to address together the greatest needs of our country
