Sovereign God,

THE WORD OF GOD
Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:
Who is this darkening counsel
with words lacking knowledge?
Prepare yourself like a man;
I will interrogate you, and you will respond to me.
Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?
Tell me if you know.
Who set its measurements? Surely you know.
Who stretched a measuring tape on it?
On what were its footings sunk;
who laid its cornerstone,

Who enclosed the Sea behind doors

Praise him in the elders’ court!
When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they could carry out their plan. They pulled up anchor and sailed closely along the coast of Crete. Before long, a hurricane-strength wind known as a northeaster swept down from Crete. The ship was caught in the storm and couldn’t be turned into the wind. So we gave in to it, and it carried us along. After sailing under the shelter of an island called Cauda, we were able to control the lifeboat only with difficulty. They brought the lifeboat aboard, then began to wrap the ship with cables to hold it together. Fearing they might run aground on the sandbars of the Gulf of Syrtis, they lowered the anchor and let the ship be carried along. We were so battered by the violent storm that the next day the men began throwing cargo overboard. On the third day, they picked up the ship’s gear and hurled it into the sea. When neither the sun nor the moon appeared for many days and the raging storm continued to pound us, all hope of our being saved from this peril faded.
For a long time no one had eaten. Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have complied with my instructions not to sail from Crete. Then we would have avoided this damage and loss. Now I urge you to be encouraged. Not one of your lives will be lost, though we will lose the ship. Last night an angel from the God to whom I belong and whom I worship stood beside me. The angel said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul! You must stand before Caesar! Indeed, God has also graciously given you everyone sailing with you.’ Be encouraged, men! I have faith in God that it will be exactly as he told me. However, we must run aground on some island.”

Be still!” The wind settled down and there was a great calm. Jesus asked them, “Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?” Overcome with awe, they said to each other, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

For the Church: that by God’s grace, we may live as new creations, no longer living for ourselves but for Christ
For a deepening of our faith: that God will draw us into a deeper friendship so that we may grow in our ability to rely upon God in every circumstance
For all fathers and those who have shown the Father’s love to us: that God will make them beacons of light, sources of encouragement and grant them peace and health
For a calming of the storms in our lives: that God will sustain us through the challenges of each day, give us the courage to make decisions, and enduring hope when we cannot foresee tomorrow
For a spirit of openness: that minds and hearts will be receptive to the insights and challenges presented by Pope Francis in the encyclical on the environment
For freedom from fear: that Jesus will lead us from fear and worry to the trust of discipleship through the words of scripture
For fidelity to those to whom we are committed: that we may be faithful to our spouses, children, community members, friends, and faith communities, encouraging and supporting one another along life’s journey
For all who work in science and medical technology: that respect and love for human life may always guide their research and use of knowledge
For all travelers: that God will smooth and quiet the way before them and guide them safely to their destination
For all who are ill: that God will bring an end to the pandemic, restore the sick to health, and strengthen all caregivers
For an end to violence: that God will turn hearts from violence, protect all innocent people from injury, and restore confidence in people seeking to live their daily lives
For all who are recovering from storms and floods or enduring drought: that God will curb the extremes of nature, ease the suffering of those impacted, and fill their hearts with hope
For Peace: that God will open communication between people of diverse cultures and ethnic groups so that new avenues may be found to build trust and promote justice for everyone
For peace and healing: that all fathers who have experienced the death of a child may know God’s embrace and healing of their pain
For all who have died, particularly our fathers: that God will welcome them to the eternal banquet in God’s presence
