Ant. The ordinances of the Lord are right, *

Almighty God,

he spoke a swarm of flies, and gnats through all the land

Struck down their vines and figs, broke trees through all the land

He spoke and locusts came, their young were beyond count,
Devouring all the land, the fruit of all their soil.
Their firstborn he struck down, first fruits of all their strength.
Led out with gold and silver, his tribes had none who fell.

Once gone Egypt was glad, they were in dread of them.
he spread a cloud to hide, a fire to shine by night.
When asked, he brought forth quail, filled with the bread of heav’n.
Split rock so water flowed; in deserts like a stream.

Recalled his holy word, to Abraham his servant;
he led them out with joy, his chosen with glad shouts.
He gave the nation’s lands, the fruit of others’ toil,
So they might keep his words, and laws, Alleluia!

PRAYER

Sovereign God,
you subdue the arrogant
and raise the humble;
you feed the hungry
and reveal the poverty of wealth.
Help us to praise your name in all times and places,
that we may be faithful servants
of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ^BCW

THE WORD OF GOD

CANTICLE: Luke 1:68-79

Ant. Blest be the Lord God of Israel; *
who has come to his people and set them free.

God has raiséd up a Savior strong and proud,
born of his servant David.
And through holy prophets God has promised from of old,
to save us from all our foes, from the hands of all who hate us. Ant.

God promised to show mercy to our ancestors
to remember the covenant.
This was the oath sworn to father Abraham,
to set us free from our enemies’ hands,
free to worship God without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. Ant.

You, little child, are the prophet of the Lord,
you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
To give the people knowledge of salvation
by forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high breaks upon us,
to shine on us who dwell in the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet on the way of peace. Ant.

THE PRAYERS ^{Joe Milner}

For the Church: that we may be witnesses to God’s message, expressions of God’s nurturing love, and instruments of God’s healing care to all who find life’s journey burdensome

For those overwhelmed by activity: that God will help them to slow down and be aware of the gifts and blessings that are in their life each day

For unity: that through Christ’s victory over death, the divisions in the human family may be dissolved and the wounds of racism and prejudice be healed

For a spirit of compassion: that God will touch our hearts with care and concern for all whom we find burdensome, needy, or demanding

For all church leaders: that they may have the hearts of true shepherds and guide the church closer to Jesus and into greater unity

For all who exercise leadership: that they may place their gifts unselfishly in the service of others and draw forth the skills of others for the fulfillment of God’s work

For all who offer retreats and places of solitude: that they will assist others in finding rest and in deepening their relationship with God

For all who serve in ministry: that God will bless their efforts, help them keep their lives in balance, and work through them to show a shepherd’s care

For support and renewal: that God will show a shepherd’s care to refugees, those displaced by violence, and living under oppressive governments and help them find the resources that they need for life

For all living in densely populated settings: that they may find a space apart where they can find silence and experience God’s presence within them and around them

For all who have suffered abuse: that God’s loving compassion will fill them with hope and courage and heal their bodies, minds, and spirits

For all who are suffering: that God will strengthen those recovering from natural disasters, give hope to those who have lost their homes, and give peace to those who are mourning

For parish communities who are being merged or consolidated: that they may trust in God’s unending love and be open to new ways of experiencing the Body of Christ

For the Jewish and Christian communities of faith: that God will heal the wounds that exist, open new opportunities for cooperation, and help us be faithful witnesses to God’s presence and action in the world

For patience and insight: that God will help parents and young people who are in conflict, help them understand each other, and lead them to new respect and cooperation
