Joseph of Arimathea
Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the Jewish Council who graciously provided a tomb for the burial of Jesus. He came from the town of Arimathea, north-west of Jerusalem. He was well-to-do and is presented in the Gospels as sympathetic to Jesus’ mission, though not an open disciple. FATS

When it seemed that Love was dying,
hope and joy forever gone,
friends of Jesus, fearful, wondered
who would help them carry on.
Joseph came to claim the body,
Nicodemus too was there,
bravely showing their allegiance,
handling him with tender care.
In a borrowed tomb they laid him,
breathless, broken, and alone;
then, before they left the garden,
sealed the doorway with a stone.
Women, watching, stood by weeping,
lost in sorrow, deep in gloom,
never dreaming God would bring forth
life anew from barren womb.
Sunday, when the tomb was empty,
Mary cried in great dismay,
till she heard these words of greeting:
“Jesus Christ is risen today.
Fear not! Go and tell the others:
There’s no need to weep or cry.
Earth is filled with alleluias!
Hope and love will never die!”
Mary and the others found their
friends who hid in fear and grief.
“Wipe your tears and gather courage!
Hear this news beyond belief:
We have seen him! Christ is living!
God has rolled away the stone!
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise God! We are not alone!”
When it seemed that Love was dying,
Love showed it could rise again,
filling empty hearts with courage,
hope, and joy, a glad “Amen!”
Let us too be alleluias,
serving you, Lord, to the end.

THE WORD OF GOD
Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid, because God has come only to test you and to make sure you are always in awe of God so that you don’t sin.” The people stood at a distance while Moses approached the thick darkness in which God was present.
The Lord said to Moses: “Say this to the Israelites: You saw for yourselves how I spoke with you from heaven. Don’t make alongside me gods of silver or gold for yourselves. Make for me an altar from fertile soil on which to sacrifice your entirely burned offerings, your well-being sacrifices, your sheep, and your oxen. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I make sure my name is remembered. But if you do make for me an altar from stones, don’t build it with chiseled stone since using your chisel on the stone will make it impure.”
Don’t spread false rumors. Don’t plot with evil people to act as a lying witness. Don’t take sides with important people to do wrong. When you act as a witness, don’t stretch the truth to favor important people. But don’t privilege unimportant people in their lawsuits either.
When you happen to come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has wandered off, you should bring it back to them.
When you see a donkey that belongs to someone who hates you and it’s lying down under its load and you are inclined not to help set it free, you must help set it free.
Don’t undermine the justice that your poor deserve in their lawsuits. Stay away from making a false charge. Don’t put an innocent person who is in the right to death, because I will not consider innocent those who do such evil. Don’t take a bribe, because a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.
Don’t oppress an immigrant. You know what it’s like to be an immigrant, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt.

I say be guided by the Spirit and you won’t carry out your selfish desires. A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires. They are opposed to each other, so you shouldn’t do whatever you want to do. But if you are being led by the Spirit, you aren’t under the Law. The actions that are produced by selfish motives are obvious, since they include sexual immorality, moral corruption, doing whatever feels good, idolatry, drug use and casting spells, hate, fighting, obsession, losing your temper, competitive opposition, conflict, selfishness, group rivalry, jealousy, drunkenness, partying, and other things like that. I warn you as I have already warned you, that those who do these kinds of things won’t inherit God’s kingdom.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against things like this. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the self with its passions and its desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit. Let’s not become arrogant, make each other angry, or be jealous of each other.

After this Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one because he feared the Jewish authorities. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and took the body away. Nicodemus, the one who at first had come to Jesus at night, was there too. He brought a mixture of myrrh and aloe, nearly seventy-five pounds in all.[a] Following Jewish burial customs, they took Jesus’ body and wrapped it, with the spices, in linen cloths. There was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus in it.
