THE WORD OF GOD
Aram’s king was fighting against Israel. He took counsel with his officers, saying, “I’ll camp at such-and-such a place.”
The man of God sent word to Israel’s king: “Beware of passing by this place because the Arameans are going down there.” Then Israel’s king sent word to the place the man of God had mentioned to him. Time after time, Elisha warned the king, and the king stayed on the alert.
Aram’s king was extremely upset about this. He called his officers and said to them, “Tell me! Who among us is siding with Israel’s king?” One of his officers said, “No one, Your Majesty! It’s Elisha the Israelite prophet who tells Israel’s king the words that you speak in the privacy of your bedroom.” He said, “Go and find out where he is. Then I will send men to capture him.” They told him, “He is in Dothan.” So the king sent horses and chariots there with a strong army. They came at night and surrounded the city.
Elisha’s servant got up early and went out. He saw an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. His servant said to Elisha, “Oh, no! Master, what will we do?” “Don’t be afraid,” Elisha said, “because there are more of us than there are of them.” Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw that the mountain was full of horses and fiery chariots surrounding Elisha.

I’m already being poured out like a sacrifice to God, and the time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. At last the champion’s wreath that is awarded for righteousness is waiting for me. The Lord, who is the righteous judge, is going to give it to me on that day. He’s giving it not only to me but also to all those who have set their heart on waiting for his appearance.
No one took my side at my first court hearing. Everyone deserted me. I hope that God doesn’t hold it against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that the entire message would be preached through me and so all the nations could hear it. I was also rescued from the lion’s mouth! The Lord will rescue me from every evil action and will save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and always. Amen.

Right then, Jesus made his disciples get into a boat and go ahead to the other side of the lake, toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After saying good-bye to them, Jesus went up onto a mountain to pray. Evening came and the boat was in the middle of the lake, but he was alone on the land. He saw his disciples struggling. They were trying to row forward, but the wind was blowing against them. Very early in the morning, he came to them, walking on the lake. He intended to pass by them. When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost and they screamed. Seeing him was terrifying to all of them. Just then he spoke to them, “Be encouraged! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” He got into the boat, and the wind settled down. His disciples were so baffled they were beside themselves. That’s because they hadn’t understood about the loaves. Their minds had been closed so that they resisted God’s ways.
When Jesus and his disciples had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret, anchored the boat, and came ashore. People immediately recognized Jesus and ran around that whole region bringing sick people on their mats to wherever they heard he was. Wherever he went—villages, cities, or farming communities—they would place the sick in the marketplaces and beg him to allow them to touch even the hem of his clothing. Everyone who touched him was healed.

For the Church: that in Christ, we may find the fulfillment of the deepest hungers of our hearts and nourishment for our life’s journey
For the grace of conversion: that we may lay aside our old habits and attitudes that rob us of life and become new persons of love and service in Christ
For openness: that God will open our minds and hearts to recognize the manna that God sends into our lives and give us the courage to utilize it
For a spirit of understanding: that Christ will free us from narrow thinking and help us take on the mind of Christ so that we may see and understand God’s vision for life
For a deepening of trust in God’s providence: that we may live in the present and be freed from the compulsions to hoard or stockpile
For the grace to be satisfied: that we may appreciate all the blessings and opportunities that God has given us rather than complain about that which we do not possess
For all who are experiencing the wilderness in their life’s journey: that they may encounter Christ in their loneliness, a new vision in times of confusion, and renewed energy when the path ahead seems endless
For freedom from grumbling and complaining: that we may be transformed by Christ and come to a new understanding of the people and the situations that lead us to negativity
For strength on our daily journey: that we find our nourishment and renewal in the Word of God and the Eucharist for all our commitments and responsibilities each day
For business and government leaders who have responsibility for food: that they will strive with new effort to alleviate the hunger and needs of the poor, refugees, and the victims of war
For all who are participating in the Olympics: that God will protect them from harm and help them to use their gift fully for God’s glory
For an end to the Covid pandemic: that God will subdue the virus, heal the sick, and give strength to all who care for them
For all who are suffering: that God will provide hope and safety to those who have fled wildfires, courage to all who are fighting the fires, and rain for those oppressed by drought
For better stewardship of earth’s resources: that government and business leaders will recognize the impact of their practices upon the environment and work to promote good stewardship of the air, land, and water
For the gift of peace: that God will end the violence in our cities and bring forth peace so that all can live in safety and use their talents for the good of one another
