
John of the Cross
Born to an impoverished noble family near Avila in Spain in 1542, Juan de Yepes was brought up by his widowed mother and went to a charity school. He worked as a nurse and received further education from the Jesuits before entering the Carmelite order when he was twenty-one. Having distinguished himself at Salamanca university, he was ordained in 1567 and met Teresa of Avila soon afterwards. Small of stature, he made a great impression on her and she persuaded him to help with her reform of the Carmelite order. His labours brought him into conflict with the religious authorities, and he was even imprisoned for a period, yet these experiences prompted some of his finest poetry and mystical writing. In particular, he described the ‘dark night’ of the soul as it is purified in its approach towards God. After ten years as superior to several different houses, he again fell out of favour and was banished to Andalusia in southern Spain, where he died after a severe illness on this day in 1591. EH

THE WORD OF GOD
On that day he will stand upon the Mount of Olives, to the east of Jerusalem.
The Mount of Olives will be split in half by a very large valley running from east to west.
Half of the mountain will move north,
and the other half will move south.
You will flee through the valley of my mountain,
because the valley of the mountains will reach to Azal.
You will flee just as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Judah’s King Uzziah.
The Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
On that day, there will be no light.
Splendid things will disappear.
On one day known to the Lord, there will be neither day nor night,
but at evening time there will be light.
On that day, running water will flow out from Jerusalem,
half of it to the Dead Sea
and half of it to the Mediterranean;
this will happen during the summer and the fall.
The Lord will become king over all the land.
On that day the Lord will be one,
and the Lord’s name will be one.
The entire land will become like the desert
from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem will be high up and firmly in place
from the Benjamin Gate to the place of the former gate,
to the Corner Gate, and from the Hananel Tower to the king’s wine vats.
People will dwell in it;
it will never again be destroyed.
Jerusalem will dwell securely.

Brothers and sisters, we command you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to stay away from every brother or sister who lives an undisciplined life that is not in line with the traditions that you received from us. You yourselves know how you need to imitate us because we were not undisciplined when we were with you. We didn’t eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, we worked night and day with effort and hard work so that we would not impose on you. We did this to give you an example to imitate, not because we didn’t have a right to insist on financial support. Even when we were with you we were giving you this command: “If anyone doesn’t want to work, they shouldn’t eat.” We hear that some of you are living an undisciplined life. They aren’t working, but they are meddling in other people’s business. By the Lord Jesus Christ, we command and encourage such people to work quietly and put their own food on the table. Brothers and sisters, don’t get discouraged in doing what is right. Take note of anyone who doesn’t obey what we have said in this letter. Don’t associate with them so they will be ashamed of themselves. Don’t treat them like enemies, but warn them like you would do for a brother or sister.
May the Lord of peace himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. I, Paul, am writing this greeting with my own hand. This verifies that the letter is from me, as in every letter of mine. This is how I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.

God of the universe and God of small things,
today we take a break
from worrying about life’s extremes.
Today we remember
that everything comes together in you,
and we do not have to understand how that can be.
We pray for our friends
and for our enemies.
We pray for those we understand
and for those who confound us.
We pray for the rich and for the poor,
for our neighbors and strangers in our midst.
We pray for the vulnerable
and for those with great power.
We trust you to know all these prayers
and how to fulfill them.
God of steadfastness and encouragement,
show us how to live in harmony
and call out vipers when we see them.
Give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor,
even as we are among their number.
Let the mountains yield prosperity for the people,
even as we hold an axe to the root of the trees.
Guide us through the eyes of these needles,
that righteousness may flourish and peace abound.
We lift to you the things that bring us joy . . .
