Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

Antiphon1

Ant. For it is God who has established the world, *
it shall never be moved;
your throne is established from of old;
you are from all eternity.
V. The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed. †
The Lord has robed himself with might; *
he has girded himself with power. Psalm 93

Almighty God,
you have poured upon us
the new light of your incarnate Word:
Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts,
may shine forth in our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

O Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth will declare your praise.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to you, O Christ, Alleluia!

HYMN: Charles Coffin; trans. John Chandler
Tune: Puer nobis https://tinyurl.com/2xjx2xmw

1. What star is this, with beams so bright,
Which shame the sun’s less radiant light?
’Tis sent t’ announce a new-born King,
Glad tidings of our God to bring.

2. ’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed:
“From Jacob shall a star proceed”;
And lo! the eastern sages stand
To read in heav’n the Lord’s command.

3. While outward signs the star displays,
An inward light the Lord conveys,
And urges them, with force benign,
To seek the Giver of the sign.

4. Oh, while the star of heav’nly grace
Invites us, Lord, to seek thy face,
May we no more that grace repel,
Or quench that light, which shines so well!

5. To God the Father, God the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
May every tongue and nation raise
An endless song of thankful praise!

Psalm 24 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/y9wmst8w)
1  The earth is the Lord’s, and all that therein is *
 the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein.
2  For he hath founded it upon the seas *
 and prepared it upon the floods.
3  Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord *
 or who shall rise up in his holy place?
4  Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart *
 and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity,
nor sworn to deceive his neighbour.
5  He shall receive the blessing from the Lord *
 and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6  This is the generation of them that seek him *
 even of them that seek thy face, O Jacob.
7  Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors *
 and the King of glory shall come in.
8  Who is the King of glory *
 it is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle.
9  Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors *
 and the King of glory shall come in.
10  Who is the King of glory *
 even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 25 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/y6uy8tmx)
1  Unto thee, O Lord, will I lift up my soul;
my God, I have put my trust in thee *
 O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me.
2  For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed *
 but such as transgress without a cause shall be put to confusion.
3  Shew me thy ways, O Lord *
 and teach me thy paths.
4  Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me *
 for thou art the God of my salvation;
in thee hath been my hope all the day long.
5  Call to remembrance, O Lord, thy tender mercies *
 and thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old.
6  O remember not the sins and offences of my youth *
 but according to thy mercy think thou upon me, O Lord, for thy goodness.
7  Gracious and righteous is the Lord *
 therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
8  Them that are meek shall he guide in judgement *
 and such as are gentle, them shall he learn his way.
9  All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth *
 unto such as keep his covenant, and his testimonies.
10  For thy Name’s sake, O Lord *
 be merciful unto my sin, for it is great.
11  What man is he, that feareth the Lord *
 him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
12  His soul shall dwell at ease *
 and his seed shall inherit the land.
13  The secret of the Lord is among them that fear him *
 and he will shew them his covenant.
14  Mine eyes are ever looking unto the Lord *
 for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.
15  Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me *
 for I am desolate, and in misery.
16  The sorrows of my heart are enlarged *
 O bring thou me out of my troubles.
17  Look upon my adversity and misery *
 and forgive me all my sin.
18  Consider mine enemies, how many they are *
 and they bear a tyrannous hate against me.
19  O keep my soul, and deliver me *
 let me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in thee.
20  Let perfectness and righteous dealing wait upon me *
 for my hope hath been in thee.
21  Deliver Israel, O God *
 out of all his troubles.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 26 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/y9r5o6yo)
1  Be thou my Judge, O Lord, for I have walked innocently *
 my trust hath been also in the Lord, therefore shall I not fall.
2  Examine me, O Lord, and prove me *
 try out my reins and my heart.
3  For thy loving-kindness is ever before mine eyes *
 and I will walk in thy truth.
4  I have not dwelt with vain persons *
 neither will I have fellowship with the deceitful.
5  I have hated the congregation of the wicked *
 and will not sit among the ungodly.
6  I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord *
 and so will I go to thine altar;
7  That I may shew the voice of thanksgiving *
 and tell of all thy wondrous works.
8  Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house *
 and the place where thine honour dwelleth.
9  O shut not up my soul with the sinners *
 nor my life with the blood-thirsty;
10  In whose hands is wickedness *
 and their right hand is full of gifts,
11  But as for me, I will walk innocently *
 O deliver me, and be merciful unto me.
12  My foot standeth right *
 I will praise the Lord in the congregations.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 24 (Plainsong: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-24-MH.mp3)
1 The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness,
the world and all its peoples.
2 It is he who set it on the seas;
on the waters he made it firm.
3 Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?
Who shall stand in his holy place?
4 The man with clean hands and pure heart,
who desires not worthless things,
(who have not sworn so as to deceive their neighbor.)
5 He shall receive blessings from the Lord
and reward from the God who saves him .
6 Such are the men who seek him,
seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7 O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors.
Let him enter, the king of glory!
8 Who is the king of glory?
The Lord, the mighty, the valiant, the Lord, the valiant in war.
9 O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors.
Let him enter, the king of glory!
10 Who is he, the king of glory?
He, the Lord of armies, he is the king of glory.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 25 (LSB Tone I: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-25-LSB.mp3)
1 To you, O LORD,*
 I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame;*
 let not my enemies exult over me.
3 Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;*
 they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
4 Make me to know your ways, O LORD;*
 teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my sal- vation;*
 for you I wait all the day long.
6 Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love,*
 for they have been from of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;*
 according to your steadfast love remember me,
 for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!
8 Good and upright is the LORD;*
 therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in what is right,*
 and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,*
 for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
11 For your name’s sake, O LORD,*
 pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who is the man who fears the LORD?*
 Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.
13 His soul shall abide in well-being,*
 and his offspring shall inherit the land.
14 The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him,*
 and he makes known to them his covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the LORD,*
 for he will pluck my feet out of the net.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,*
 for I am lonely and afflicted.
17The troubles of my heart are enlarged;*
 bring me out of my distresses.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,*
 and forgive all my sins.
19 Consider how many are my foes,*
 and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!*
 Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,*
 for I wait for you.
22Redeem Israel, O God,*
 out of all his troubles.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
 and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the be ginning,*
 is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 26 (Plainsong: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-26-MH.mp3)
1 Give judgment for me, O Lord:
for I walk the path of perfection.
I trust in the Lord; I have not wavered.
2 Examine me, Lord, and try me;
O test my heart and my mind,
3 for your love is before my eyes
and I walk according to your truth.
4 I never take my place with liars
and with hypocrites I shall not go.
5 I hate the evil-doer’s company:
I will not take my place with the wicked.
6 To prove my innocence I wash my hands
and take my place around your altar,
7 singing a song of thanksgiving,
proclaiming all your wonders.
8 O Lord, I love the house where you dwell,
the place where your glory abides.
9 Do not sweep me away with sinners,
nor my life with bloodthirsty men
10 in whose hands are evil plots,
whose right hands are filled with gold.
11 As for me, I walk the path of perfection.
Redeem me and show me your mercy.
12 My foot stands on level ground:
I will bless the Lord in the assembly.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

PRAYER

God of all creation,
open our hearts
that Christ, the King of glory, may enter and rule our lives.
Give us clean hands and pure hearts,
that we may stand in your presence and receive your blessing
through the same, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BCW

THE WORD OF GOD

The Lord proclaims:
Sing joyfully for the people of Jacob;
    shout for the leading nation.
Raise your voices with praise and call out:
    “The Lord has saved his people,
    the remaining few in Israel!”

I’m going to bring them back from the north;
    I will gather them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind and the disabled,
    expectant mothers and those in labor;
        a great throng will return here.
With tears of joy they will come;
    while they pray, I will bring them back.
I will lead them by quiet streams
    and on smooth paths so they don’t stumble.
I will be Israel’s father,
    Ephraim will be my oldest child.

Listen to the Lord’s word, you nations,
    and announce it to the distant islands:
The one who scattered Israel will gather them
    and keep them safe, as a shepherd his flock.
The Lord will rescue the people of Jacob
    and deliver them from the power of those stronger than they are.
They will come shouting for joy on the hills of Zion,
    jubilant over the Lord’s gifts:
        grain, wine, oil, flocks, and herds.
Their lives will be like a lush garden;
    they will grieve no more.
Then the young women will dance for joy;
    the young and old men will join in.
I will turn their mourning into laughter
    and their sadness into joy;
        I will comfort them.
I will lavish the priests with abundance
    and shower my people with my gifts,
        declares the Lord.

HYMN: Jeremiah 31; para. Helen Otte ©
Tune: Russian Hymn https://tinyurl.com/mrfj5vbf

1 I am the LORD your God; you are my people.
I am your Savior, preserver, and rock.
I am your God, keeping watch like a shepherd,
caring for Israel, my people, my flock.

2 Sing praise to God the LORD, gathering his people,
bringing them in from all parts of the earth.
Blind, lame, and weak he will lead all together,
gently exchanging their weeping for mirth.

3 God will establish us, keeping his covenant,
which will extend to each nation and race:
God’s law will dwell in the hearts of his people;
they will be blessed with his favor and grace.

This is why I, Paul, am a prisoner of Christ for you Gentiles.

You’ve heard, of course, about the responsibility to distribute God’s grace, which God gave to me for you, right? God showed me his secret plan in a revelation, as I mentioned briefly before (when you read this, you’ll understand my insight into the secret plan about Christ). Earlier generations didn’t know this hidden plan that God has now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets through the Spirit. This plan is that the Gentiles would be coheirs and parts of the same body, and that they would share with the Jews in the promises of God in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I became a servant of the gospel because of the grace that God showed me through the exercise of his power.

God gave his grace to me, the least of all God’s people, to preach the good news about the immeasurable riches of Christ to the Gentiles. God sent me to reveal the secret plan that had been hidden since the beginning of time by God, who created everything. God’s purpose is now to show the rulers and powers in the heavens the many different varieties of his wisdom through the church. This was consistent with the plan he had from the beginning of time that he accomplished through Christ Jesus our Lord. In Christ we have bold and confident access to God through faith in him. So then, I ask you not to become discouraged by what I’m suffering for you, which is your glory.

HYMN: Latin; trans. John Mason Neale
Tune: Oriel https://tinyurl.com/4td88cr3

1 To the name of our salvation
laud and honour let us pay,
which for many a generation
hid in God’s foreknowledge lay,
but with holy exultation
we may sing aloud to-day.

2 Jesus is the name we treasure,
name beyond what words can tell;
name of gladness, name of pleasure,
ear and heart delighting well;
name of sweetness passing measure,
saving us from sin and hell.

3 ‘Tis the name that whoso preacheth
speaks like music to the ear;
who in prayer this name beseecheth
sweetest comfort findeth near;
who its perfect wisdom reacheth
heavenly joy possesseth here.

4 Jesus is the name exalted
over every other name;
in this name, whene’er assaulted,
we can put our foes to shame:
strength to them who else had halted,
eyes to blind, and feet to lame.

5 Therefore we in love adoring
this most blessed name revere,
holy Jesu, thee imploring
so to write it in us here,
that hereafter heavenward soaring
we may sing with angels there.

Jesus spoke to the people again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Then the Pharisees said to him, “Because you are testifying about yourself, your testimony isn’t valid.” Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, since I know where I came from and where I’m going. You don’t know where I come from or where I’m going. You judge according to human standards, but I judge no one. Even if I do judge, my judgment is truthful, because I’m not alone. My judgments come from me and from the Father who sent me. In your Law it is written that the witness of two people is true. I am one witness concerning myself, and the Father who sent me is the other.”

They asked him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You don’t know me and you don’t know my Father. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” He spoke these words while he was teaching in the temple area known as the treasury. No one arrested him, because his time hadn’t yet come.

THE PRAYERS Joe Milner

For the Church: that, through our words and deeds, we may be a Light to those who are searching for direction and a sign of hope for those seeking to begin again

For a deeper awareness of the signs along our spiritual journey: that we learn from the people and experiences in our lives how to recognize God’s presence and invitations

For God’s blessing on the New Year: that God will fill the coming days with health of body, mind, and spirit; renew the gifts of the Spirit within us, and inspire us with new ways to share the Good News with others

For greater trust: that, like the Wise Men, God’s Light may guide us through the unknown of the coming days as we rely more deeply on God’s love and care for us

For a great utilization of our gifts and talents: that like the magi, we may offer all our gifts to God and use them in the service of God’s reign

For a spirit of wonder: that our hearts may be filled with joy as we recognize God’s many gifts to us in our faith, our relationships, and our opportunities

For catechumens and candidates: that their search for Christ and a Christian Community may lead them to an ever-deepening experience of Emmanuel

For a renewal of prayer in our lives: that we may make time for God each day of this year and be attentive to God’s invitations and promptings in our hearts

For greater unity and cooperation within the human family: that God will heal the wounds of racial bias, open hearts to the talents of every person, and help us work together against violence, drug abuse, and poverty

For all recovering from natural disasters: that God will guide them through the challenges that they face, renew their spirits, and open the hearts of many to assist and encourage them

For those bound by fear: that God will free their spirits, help them to trust God’s providence, and open a vision of the future for them

For members of the administration and Congress: that God will give them a clear understanding of the issues before them and wisdom to effectively address them for the common good

For the people of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and all the Holy Land: that God will ease their burdens, open opportunities, and establish justice for them

For all who are ill: that God restore the sick, protect the human family from the Covid virus, and give strength to all healthcare workers

For all who have died: that the Light of God’s love may lead them into the joy of God’s presence forever

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
and forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

God of glory,
your splendor shines from a manger in Bethlehem,
where the Light of the world is humbly born
into the darkness of human night.
Open our eyes to Christ’s presence in the shadows of our world,
so that we, like him, may become beacons of your justice,
and defenders of all for whom there is no room. Amen. RCLP
