The things we have heard and understood, *

but will tell them to the next generation:
O God our mystery,

in your dance of trinity

Listen, listen, listen, O my people
Listen, my people, to instruction;
give ear to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable,
and utter dark sayings of old,

our fathers passed on to us.
Not hiding them from their children,
but telling generations to come
The praise of the LORD and his strength,
the wonderful works he has done.
He established a witness in Jacob,
and appointed a law in Israel,
Which he commanded our fathers,
to teach them to their children,
that ages to come might know,
even children yet to be born,

They’d rise to tell their children,
to fix their hearts upon God
And not to forget the works of God,
but keep all his commands,
And not be like their fathers,
a stubborn rebellious age,

Ephraim’s sons were archers with bows,
but left in the day of battle.
Not keeping God’s covenant,
refusing to walk in his law;
forgetting about his deeds,
his miracles that he showed them.
His wonders before their fathers,
in Egypt and Zoan’s field.

Dividing the sea so they passed through,
making the waters stand in a heap.
Leading with cloud by day,
with a light of fire by night.
He split the rocks in the wilderness,
gave drink in full like the ocean depths.
He brought a stream from the rock,

Yet they persisted in sin in the desert
against the Most high.
In their heart putting God to the test,
by asking for food they desired.
Against their God they grumbled,
in deserts will God set table?
He struck the rock so that waters,
gushed forth in flowing streams.

Can he give meat for his people?”
Therefore the LORD God heard them,
and then he was full of wrath;
A fire was kindled in Jacob,
and anger then burned against Israel,
For they did not have faith in God,
refusing to trust his salvation.
Yet he called the clouds above,
and opened the doors of heaven;
Rained manna down for them to eat,
and gave them food from heaven.
Man ate the bread of angels;
He sent them food in abundance.
The east winds blew in the heavens,
and with power he called the south wind.

But they deceived with their mouth,
they lied to him with their tongue.
Their heart was never steadfast to him,

But He, in loving compassion,

His wrath he did not arouse.
Remembering they were but flesh,
fleeting wind that does not return.
They often rebelled in the wilderness,
and grieved him in the desert!
Again and again they tested God,
grieving the Holy One of Israel.

the day when he saved from their enemies,
in Egypt he showed his miracles,
His signs in the field of Zoan,
He turned their rivers to blood,

Sending out flies that devoured,

the fruit of their toil to swarms.
Destroying their vines with his hail,
their sycamores all with his frost.
He gave their cattle to hailstones,
their herds to bolts of lightning.
He loosed his burning anger,
with fury and rage and anguish

With a band of destroying angels,
He leveled a path for his anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
but gave their life to the plague,
And smote the firstborn in Egypt,
the firstborn of strength in the tents of Ham.
Like sheep he led his own people,
a flock he led through the wilderness;
In safety he led with no fear;
as waters then covered their foes.
He brought them to his holy land,
to the mountain his right hand had gained.
Expelling the nations he split the land,
the tribes of Isr’el lived in their tents.
But grumbling and testing the Most high God,
they would not keep his witness,

Just like their fathers turned traitor;
they turned like a treacherous bow.
Provoking him with their high places,
His jealousy with graven idols.
When God heard this he was filled
with wrath, and greatly detested Israel;
He abandoned his dwelling at Shiloh,

He gave his strength to captivity,
His glory to the hand of the enemy.
His people he gave to the sword,
His wrath burned against his inheritance.
Fire devoured his young men,
His virgins had no wedding songs.
His priests then fell by the sword,
and his widows could not even weep.

The Lord then awoke from his slumber,
like a warrior rejoicing from wine.
He drove away all his enemies;
He heaped on lasting reproach.
He left the tents of Joseph,
not choosing the tribe of Ephraim,
But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which he loved.
He built on high his Holy Place,
as earth was founded forever.
He also chose David his servant,
taking him from the sheepfolds;
From ewes and lambs he brought him,
to shepherd his people and heritage.
He shepherded with deep integrity,
and led them with skillful hands.

God of pilgrims,
strengthen our faith, we pray.
Guide us through the uncertainties of our journey,
and hold before us the vision of your eternal kingdom,

THE WORD OF GOD
When God began to create the heavens and the earth— the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the deep sea, and God’s wind swept over the waters— God said, “Let there be light.” And so light appeared. God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light Day and the darkness Night. There was evening and there was morning: the first day.
God said, “Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters to separate the waters from each other.” God made the dome and separated the waters under the dome from the waters above the dome. And it happened in that way. God named the dome Sky. There was evening and there was morning: the second day.
God said, “Let the waters under the sky come together into one place so that the dry land can appear.” And that’s what happened. God named the dry land Earth, and he named the gathered waters Seas. God saw how good it was. God said, “Let the earth grow plant life: plants yielding seeds and fruit trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind throughout the earth.” And that’s what happened. The earth produced plant life: plants yielding seeds, each according to its kind, and trees bearing fruit with seeds inside it, each according to its kind. God saw how good it was. There was evening and there was morning: the third day.
God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will mark events, sacred seasons, days, and years. They will be lights in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth.” And that’s what happened. God made the stars and two great lights: the larger light to rule over the day and the smaller light to rule over the night. God put them in the dome of the sky to shine on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw how good it was. There was evening and there was morning: the fourth day.
God said, “Let the waters swarm with living things, and let birds fly above the earth up in the dome of the sky.” God created the great sea animals and all the tiny living things that swarm in the waters, each according to its kind, and all the winged birds, each according to its kind. God saw how good it was. Then God blessed them: “Be fertile and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” There was evening and there was morning: the fifth day.
God said, “Let the earth produce every kind of living thing: livestock, crawling things, and wildlife.” And that’s what happened. God made every kind of wildlife, every kind of livestock, and every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw how good it was. Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth.”
God created humanity in God’s own image,
in the divine image God created them,
male and female God created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything crawling on the ground.” Then God said, “I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your food. To all wildlife, to all the birds in the sky, and to everything crawling on the ground—to everything that breathes—I give all the green grasses for food.” And that’s what happened. God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good. There was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.
The heavens and the earth and all who live in them were completed. On the sixth day God completed all the work that he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all the work that he had done. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation.

After this I looked and there was a door that had been opened in heaven. The first voice that I had heard, which sounded like a trumpet, said to me, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in a Spirit-inspired trance and I saw a throne in heaven, and someone was seated on the throne. The one seated there looked like jasper and carnelian, and surrounding the throne was a rainbow that looked like an emerald. Twenty-four thrones, with twenty-four elders seated upon them, surrounded the throne. The elders were dressed in white clothing and had gold crowns on their heads. From the throne came lightning, voices, and thunder. In front of the throne were seven flaming torches, which are the seven spirits of God. Something like a glass sea, like crystal, was in front of the throne.
In the center, by the throne, were four living creatures encircling the throne. These creatures were covered with eyes on the front and on the back. The first living creature was like a lion. The second living creature was like an ox. The third living creature had a face like a human being. And the fourth living creature was like an eagle in flight. Each of the four living creatures had six wings, and each was covered all around and on the inside with eyes. They never rest day or night, but keep on saying,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is coming.”
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the one seated on the throne, who lives forever and always, the twenty-four elders fall before the one seated on the throne. They worship the one who lives forever and always. They throw down their crowns before the throne and say,
“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
because you created all things.
It is by your will that they existed and were created.”

For the Church: that we may experience the length, breadth, and depth of God’s love that has been poured out into our hearts so that we may be transformed and fully live as children of God
For a deeper appreciation of the gift of nature: that we may see in the heavens, on the earth, and in the sea the handiwork of God and delight in God’s gifts to us
For a greater desire for truth: that we continually seek the truth so that we may see God in all things and be aware that we are always in God’s presence
For a deepening of virtue in our lives: that we grow in patience, endurance, fortitude, and hope and thus manifest God’s life in us
For all who need conversion: that God’s generous love will help those trapped by crime to seek a new way, those who hold others in servitude to free them, and help those who have abused others to change their behavior
For renewal of our relationships: that the life and love of the Trinity will inspire us as we and grow in our relationships and learn to share our lives and enrich the lives of those to whom we are committed more fully
For all who participate in a faith community: that the Trinity will inspire them to work for the common good, encourage and accept one another, and make room for the gifts of one another
For all who are preparing to celebrate matrimony this spring or summer: that God will form them into a community of life, strengthen their commitment to each other, and help them to encounter Jesus in their love for each other
For all who are facing their addiction: that God’s healing Spirit will free them, open them to new sources of strength, and restore their lives
For healing: that God will bring an end to the Covid pandemic, bring healing to all who are ill, and give strength to all who are caring for them
For all who have been kidnapped, particularly missionaries: that God will preserve them from harm and open a pathway for them to return to their communities
For leaders of religion, government, and communities: that the Spirit will inspire them with ways to resolve the issues of injustice, firearms, and immigration so that all may live in peace and safety
For all living in violent situations: that God will protect all who are in danger, renew their hope and courage, and strengthen their ties to each other
For the gift of peace: that God will bring an end to the violence, give leaders a new understanding of the dignity of each life, and deepen the desire for peace in their hearts
For all who have been touched by violence: that God will give eternal life to all who have died by violence recently and console those who are grieving their passing
