Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a wealthy family. In the face of their opposition, she insisted that she wished to train in nursing. In 1853, she finally achieved her wish and headed her own private nursing institute in London. Her efforts at improving conditions for the wounded during the Crimean War won her great acclaim and she devoted the rest of her life to reforming nursing care. Her school at St Thomas’s Hospital became significant in helping to elevate nursing into a profession. An Anglican, she remained committed to a personal mystical religion which sustained her through many years of poor health until her death in 1910. EH

THE WORD OF GOD
On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, the cloud ascended from the covenant dwelling. The Israelites set out on their march from the Sinai desert, and the cloud settled in the Paran desert.
They marched for the first time at the Lord’s command through Moses. Moses said to Hobab the Midianite, Reuel’s son and Moses’ father-in-law, “We’re marching to the place about which the Lord has said, ‘I’ll give it to you.’ Come with us and we’ll treat you well, for the Lord has promised to treat Israel well.”
Hobab said to him, “I won’t go; I’d rather go to my land and to my folk.” Moses said, “Please don’t abandon us, for you know where we can camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes. If you go with us, whatever good the Lord does for us, we’ll do for you.”
They marched from the Lord’s mountain for three days. The Lord’s chest containing the covenant marched ahead of them for three days to look for a resting place for them. Now the Lord’s cloud was over them by day when they marched from the camp. When the chest set out, Moses would say, “Arise, Lord, let your enemies scatter, and those who hate you flee.” When it rested, he would say, “Return, Lord of the ten thousand thousands of Israel.”

I’m not writing these things to make you ashamed but to warn you, since you are my loved children. You may have ten thousand mentors in Christ, but you don’t have many fathers. I gave birth to you in Christ Jesus through the gospel, so I encourage you to follow my example. This is why I’ve sent Timothy to you; he’s my loved and trusted child in the Lord; he’ll remind you about my way of life in Christ Jesus. He’ll teach the same way as I teach everywhere in every church. Some have become arrogant as if I’m not coming to see you. But, if the Lord is willing, I’ll come to you soon. Then I won’t focus on what these arrogant people say, but I’ll find out what power they possess. God’s kingdom isn’t about words but about power. Which do you want? Should I come to you with a big stick to punish you, or with love and a gentle spirit?

And let us offer our own petitions,
trusting in God’s wisdom and compassion . . .
