Antiphon https://tinyurl.com/2p8skw3h

I am the true vine and you are the branches, says the Lord.
Whoever remains in me, and I in him, bears fruit in plenty, alleluia. John 15

Eternal God,
you are the source of every gift,
and the fountain of all blessing.
Give us such joy in living
and such peace in serving Christ,
that we may gratefully make use of all your blessings,
and joyfully seek our risen Lord in everyone we meet.
In Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. BCW2018

O Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth will declare your praise.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to you, O Christ, Alleluia!

HYMN: Timothy Dudley-Smith ©
Tune: All Saints https://tinyurl.com/3y72byff

1 Lord, who left the highest heaven
for a homeless human birth
and, a child within a stable,
came to share the life of earth,
with your grace and mercy bless
all who suffer homelessness.

2 Lord, who sought by cloak of darkness
refuge under foreign skies
from the swords of Herod’s soldiers,
ravaged homes and parents’ cries,
may your grace and mercy rest
on the homeless and oppressed.

3 Lord, who lived secure and settled,
safe within the Father’s plan,
and in wisdom, stature, favor
growing up from boy to man,
with your grace and mercy bless
all who strive for holiness.

4 Lord, who leaving home and kindred,
followed still as duty led,
sky the roof and earth the pillow
for the Prince of glory’s head,
with your grace and mercy bless
sacrifice for righteousness.

5 Lord, who in your cross and passion
hung beneath a darkened sky,
yet whose thoughts were for your mother,
and a thief condemned to die,
may your grace and mercy rest
on the helpless and distressed.

6 Lord, who rose to life triumphant
with our whole salvation won,
risen, glorified, ascended,
all the Father’s purpose done,
may your grace, all conflict past,
bring your children home at last.

Psalm 86 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/vmvol2r)
1  Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear me *
for I am poor, and in misery.
2  Preserve thou my soul, for I am holy *
my God, save thy servant that putteth his trust in thee.
3  Be merciful unto me, O Lord *
for I will call daily upon thee.
4  Comfort the soul of thy servant *
for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5  For thou, Lord, art good and gracious *
and of great mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
6  Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer *
and ponder the voice of my humble desires.
7  In the time of my trouble I will call upon thee *
 for thou hearest me.
8  Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord *
there is not one that can do as thou doest.
9  All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship thee, O Lord *
 and shall glorify thy Name.
10  For thou art great, and doest wondrous things *
 thou art God alone.
11  Teach me thy way, O Lord, and I will walk in thy truth *
O knit my heart unto thee, that I may fear thy Name.
12  I will thank thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart *
and will praise thy Name for evermore.
13  For great is thy mercy toward me *
and thou hast delivered my soul from the nethermost hell.
14  O God, the proud are risen against me *
and the congregations of naughty men
have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before their eyes.
15  But thou, O Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy *
long-suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth.
16  O turn thee then unto me, and have mercy upon me *
give thy strength unto thy servant, and help the son of thine handmaid.
17  Shew some token upon me for good,
that they who hate me may see it, and be ashamed *
because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,*
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 87 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/sjg229z)
1  Her foundations are upon the holy hills *
the Lord loveth the gates of Sion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
2  Very excellent things are spoken of thee *
 thou city of God.
3  I will think upon Rahab and Babylon *
 with them that know me.
4  Behold ye the Philistines also *
and they of Tyre, with the Morians; lo, there was he born.
5  And of Sion it shall be reported that he was born in her *
and the most High shall stablish her.
6  The Lord shall rehearse it when he writeth up the people *
 that he was born there.
7  The singers also and trumpeters shall he rehearse *
All my fresh springs shall be in thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 88 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/tl4xkf)
1  O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee *
O let my prayer enter into thy presence, incline thine ear unto my calling.
2  For my soul is full of trouble *
and my life draweth nigh unto hell.
3  I am counted as one of them that go down into the pit *
and I have been even as a man that hath no strength.
4  Free among the dead, like unto them that are wounded, and lie in the grave *
who are out of remembrance, and are cut away from thy hand.
5  Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit *
in a place of darkness, and in the deep.
6  Thine indignation lieth hard upon me *
and thou hast vexed me with all thy storms.
7  Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me *
and made me to be abhorred of them.
8  I am so fast in prison *
 that I cannot get forth.
9  My sight faileth for very trouble *
Lord, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched forth my hands unto thee.
10  Dost thou shew wonders among the dead *
or shall the dead rise up again, and praise thee?
11  Shall thy loving-kindness be shewed in the grave *
 or thy faithfulness in destruction?
12  Shall thy wondrous works be known in the dark *
and thy righteousness in the land where all things are forgotten?
13  Unto thee have I cried, O Lord *
and early shall my prayer come before thee.
14  Lord, why abhorrest thou my soul *
and hidest thou thy face from me?
15  I am in misery, and like unto him that is at the point to die *
even from my youth up thy terrors have I suffered with a troubled mind.
16  Thy wrathful displeasure goeth over me *
and the fear of thee hath undone me.
17  They came round about me daily like water *
and compassed me together on every side.
18  My lovers and friends hast thou put away from me *
and hid mine acquaintance out of my sight.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 86 (LSB Tone B: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-86-LSB.mp3)
1 Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me,*
for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my life, for I am godly;*
save your servant, who trusts in you— you are my God.
3 Be gracious to me, O Lord,*
for to you do I cry all the day.
4 Gladden the soul of your servant,*
for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,*
abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;*
listen to my plea for grace.
7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you,*
 for you answer me.
8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,*
nor are there any works like yours.
9 All the nations you have made
shall come and worship before you, O Lord,*
 and shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;*
 you alone are God.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD,
that I may walk in your truth;*
unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,*
and I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your steadfast love toward me;*
you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14 O God, insolent men have risen up against me;
a band of ruthless men seek my life,*
and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,*
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;*
give your strength to your servant,
and save the son of your maidservant.
17 Show me a sign of your favor,*
that those who hate me may see
and be put to shame because you, LORD,
have helped me and comforted me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
 and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Psalm 87 (Gregorian Tone VIII.1)

1 The Lord loves the foundation

the gates of Zion are dearer to him than
all the dwellings of Jacob.

O city of God.
3 I will consider Egypt and Babylon *
among those who know me.
4 Behold Philistia also, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; *
each one was born in her.

and the Most High shall establish her.
6 The Lord shall record it when he registers the people, *
that each one was born there.
7 The singers and the dancers also shall say, *
“All my fresh springs are in you.”
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

in a place of darkness, and in the deep.
6 Your indignation lies heavy upon me, *
and you have overwhelmed me with all your storms.
7 You have put my friends far from me, *
and made me to be abhorred by them.
8 I am in prison; *
I cannot go forth.
9 My sight fails because of trouble; *
Lord, I have called daily upon you;
I have stretched forth my hands unto you.
10 Do you show wonders among the dead, *
or shall the dead rise up again and praise you?
11 Shall your loving-kindness be shown in the grave, *

and hide your face from me?
15 I am in misery, like one who is at the point of death; *
even from my youth,
your terrors have I suffered with a troubled mind.

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

PRAYER

Lord, as you call us to your city
founded on the rock of ages,
let the springs of living water
rise within us to eternal life;
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CW:DP

THE WORD OF GOD
READING: Jeremiah 36:1-26
In the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: Take a scroll and write in it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations from the time of Josiah until today. Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I intend to bring upon them, they will turn from their evil ways, and I will forgive their wrongdoing and sins. So Jeremiah sent for Baruch, Neriah’s son. As Jeremiah dictated all the words that the Lord had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them in the scroll. Then Jeremiah told Baruch, “I’m confined here and can’t go to the Lord’s temple. So you go to the temple on the next day of fasting, and read the Lord’s words from the scroll that I have dictated to you. Read them so that all the people in the temple can hear them, as well as all the Judeans who have come from their towns. If they turn from their evil ways, perhaps the Lord will hear their prayers. The Lord has threatened them with fierce anger.” Baruch, Neriah’s son, did everything the prophet Jeremiah instructed him: he read all the Lord’s words from the scroll in the temple.

In the ninth month of the fifth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, all the people in Jerusalem and all those who had come from Judean towns observed a fast for the Lord in Jerusalem. Then Baruch read Jeremiah’s words from the scroll to all the people in the Lord’s temple; he read them in the chamber of Gemariah, Shaphan the scribe’s son, in the upper courtyard near the entrance of the New Gate of the Lord’s temple. When Micaiah, Gemariah’s son and Shaphan’s grandson, heard all the Lord’s words from the scroll, he went down to the scribes’ chamber in the royal palace. There he found all the officials meeting together: Elishama the scribe; Delaiah, Shemaiah’s son; Elnathan, Achbor’s son; Gemariah, Shaphan’s son; Zedekiah, Hananiah’s son, and all the other officials. Micaiah told them all the words he heard Baruch read from the scroll before the people.

Then all the officials sent Jehudi, Nethaniah’s son and Shelemiah’s grandson, and Cushi’s great-grandson, to Baruch: “Take the scroll you read to the people and come with me.”

So Baruch, Neriah’s son, took the scroll and went to the officials. They said to him, “Sit down and read it to us.” So Baruch read it to them. When they heard all its words, they were alarmed and said to Baruch: “We must at once report all this to the king!” Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you write all these words? Did they come from Jeremiah?”

Baruch replied, “He dictated all the words to me, and I wrote them with ink in the scroll.”

The officials then said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah had better go and hide. And don’t let anyone know where you are.”

After leaving the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe, they went to the king’s court and told him everything. The king sent Jehudi to take the scroll, and he retrieved it from the room of Elishama the scribe. Then Jehudi read it to the king and all his royal officials who were standing next to the king. Now it was the ninth month, and the king was staying in the winterized part of the palace with the firepot burning near him. And whenever Jehudi read three or four columns of the scroll, the king would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the firepot until the whole scroll was burned up. Neither the king nor any of his attendants who heard all these words were alarmed or tore their clothes. Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the scroll, but he wouldn’t listen to them.

The king commanded Jerahmeel, the king’s son, along with Seraiah, Azriel’s son, and Shelemiah, Abdeel’s son, to arrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But the Lord hid them.

HYMN: Frederick William Faber
Tune: St Catherine https://tinyurl.com/2nz99j83

1 Faith of our fathers! living still
in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword:
O how our hearts beat high with joy,
whene’er we hear that glorious word:

Refrain:
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

2 Faith of our fathers! faith and prayer
shall win all nations unto thee;
and through the truth that comes from God,
mankind shall then indeed be free. [Refrain]

3 Faith of our fathers! we will love
both friend and foe in all our strife:
and preach thee, too, as love knows how,
by kindly deeds and virtuous life. [Refrain]

READING: Titus 1:1-9
From Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I’m sent to bring about the faith of God’s chosen people and a knowledge of the truth that agrees with godliness.

Their faith and this knowledge are based on the hope of eternal life that God, who doesn’t lie, promised before time began. God revealed his message at the appropriate time through preaching, and I was trusted with preaching this message by the command of God our savior.

To Titus, my true child in a common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior.

The reason I left you behind in Crete was to organize whatever needs to be done and to appoint elders in each city, as I told you. Elders should be without fault. They should be faithful to their spouse, and have faithful children who can’t be accused of self-indulgence or rebelliousness. This is because supervisors should be without fault as God’s managers: they shouldn’t be stubborn, irritable, addicted to alcohol, a bully, or greedy. Instead, they should show hospitality, love what is good, and be reasonable, ethical, godly, and self-controlled. They must pay attention to the reliable message as it has been taught to them so that they can encourage people with healthy instruction and refute those who speak against it.

HYMN: Thomas O Chisholm
Tune: https://tinyurl.com/hazktjw5

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:
Great is thy faithfulness,
Great is thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hast provided;
Great is thy faithfulness,
Lord unto me.

2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. [Refrain]

3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine and ten thousand beside. [Refrain]

READING: Luke 18:18-30
A certain ruler asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to obtain eternal life?” Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except the one God. You know the commandments: Don’t commit adultery. Don’t murder. Don’t steal. Don’t give false testimony. Honor your father and mother.”

Then the ruler said, “I’ve kept all of these things since I was a boy.” When Jesus heard this, he said, “There’s one more thing. Sell everything you own and distribute the money to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.” When he heard these words, the man became sad because he was extremely rich.

When Jesus saw this, he said, “It’s very hard for the wealthy to enter God’s kingdom! It’s easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom.”

Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus replied, “What is impossible for humans is possible for God.”

Peter said, “Look, we left everything we own and followed you.” Jesus said to them, “I assure you that anyone who has left house, husband, wife, brothers, sisters, parents, or children because of God’s kingdom will receive many times more in this age and eternal life in the coming age.”

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today the bread of life;
and forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

God, you promise never to forsake us,
but to bring us to life,
nurture us with your presence,
and sustain us even in the hour of our death.
Meet us in our deepest doubts
when we feel abandoned,
drowning in our fear of your absence.
Visit us in the tension between our yearning and our anger,
that we may know your mercy and grace in our time of need. Amen. RCLP
