John Wesley
Born at Epworth Rectory in Lincolnshire, John Wesley was the son of an Anglican clergyman and a Puritan mother. He entered Holy Orders and, following a religious experience on this day in 1738, began an itinerant ministry which recognised no parish boundaries. This resulted, after his death, in the development of a world-wide Methodist Church. His spirituality involved an Arminian affirmation of grace, frequent communion and a disciplined corporate search for holiness. His open-air preaching, concern for education and for the poor, liturgical revision, organisation of local societies and training of preachers provided a firm basis for Christian growth and mission in England. He died on this day in 1791. EH

O sing a new song to the Lord;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
In his presence are majesty and splendor,
strength and honor in his holy place. Psalm 96
Forgive them all, O Lord:
our sins of omission and our sins of commission;
the sins of our youth and the sins of our riper years;
the sins of our souls and the sins of our bodies;
our secret and our more open sins;
our sins of ignorance and surprise, and our more deliberate and presumptuous sins;
the sins we have done to please ourselves
and the sins we have done to please others;
the sins we know and remember,
and the sins we have forgotten;
the sins we have striven to hide from others
and the sins by which we have made others offend;
forgive them, O Lord, forgive them all for his sake,
who died for our sins and rose for our justification,
and now stands at thy right hand to make intercession for us,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. John Wesley

God, come to my assistance.
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
HYMN: John Wesley
Tune: St Catherine https://tinyurl.com/y9ppn2x6
1 O Jesus, Source of calm repose,
Thy like no man nor angel knows,
Fairest among ten thousand fair!
E’en those whom death’s sad fetters bound,
Whom thickest darkness compassed round,
Find light and life, if Thou appear.
2 Renew Thine image, Lord, in me,
Lowly and gentle may I be;
No charms but these are to Thee dear:
No anger may’st Thou ever find,
No pride, in my unruffled mind,
But faith and heaven-born peace, be there.
3 A patient, a victorious mind
That life and all things cast behind,
Springs forth obedient to Thy call,
A heart that no desire can move,
But still to praise, believe, and love,
Give me, my Lord, my Life, my All!

Psalm 9 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/yczh7vnk)
1 I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart *
I will speak of all thy marvellous works.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee *
yea, my songs will I make of thy Name, O thou most Highest.
3 While mine enemies are driven back *
they shall fall and perish at thy presence.
4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause *
thou art set in the throne that judgest right.
5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, and destroyed the ungodly *
thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.
6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end *
even as the cities which thou hast destroyed;
their memorial is perished with them.
7 But the Lord shall endure for ever *
he hath also prepared his seat for judgement.
8 For he shall judge the world in righteousness *
and minister true judgement unto the people.
9 The Lord also will be a defence for the oppressed *
even a refuge in due time of trouble.
10 And they that know thy Name will put their trust in thee *
for thou, Lord, hast never failed them that seek thee.
11 O praise the Lord which dwelleth in Sion *
shew the people of his doings.
12 For, when he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them *
and forgetteth not the complaint of the poor.
13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider the trouble
which I suffer of them that hate me *
thou that liftest me up from the gates of death.
14 That I may shew all thy praises
within the ports of the daughter of Sion *
I will rejoice in thy salvation.
15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made *
in the same net which they hid privily, is their foot taken.
16 The Lord is known to execute judgement *
the ungodly is trapped in the work of his own hands.
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell *
and all the people that forget God.
18 For the poor shall not alway be forgotten *
the patient abiding of the meek shall not perish for ever.
19 Up, Lord, and let not man have the upper hand *
let the heathen be judged in thy sight.
20 Put them in fear, O Lord *
that the heathen may know themselves to be but men.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
Psalm 10 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/yakosuxg)
1 Why standest thou so far off, O Lord *
and hidest thy face in the needful time of trouble?
2 The ungodly for his own lust doth persecute the poor *
let them be taken in the crafty wiliness that they have imagined.
3 For the ungodly hath made boast of his own heart’s desire *
and speaketh good of the covetous, whom God abhorreth.
4 The ungodly is so proud, that he careth not for God *
neither is God in all his thoughts.
5 His ways are alway grievous *
thy judgements are far above out of his sight,
and therefore defieth he all his enemies.
6 For he hath said in his heart, Tush, I shall never be cast down *
there shall no harm happen unto me.
7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and fraud *
under his tongue is ungodliness and vanity.
8 He sitteth lurking in the thievish corners of the streets *
and privily in his lurking dens doth he murder the innocent;
his eyes are set against the poor.
9 For he lieth waiting secretly, even as a lion lurketh he in his den *
that he may ravish the poor.
10 He doth ravish the poor *
when he getteth him into his net.
11 He falleth down, and humbleth himself *
that the congregation of the poor may fall into the hands of his captains.
12 He hath said in his heart, Tush, God hath forgotten *
he hideth away his face, and he will never see it.
13 Arise, O Lord God, and lift up thine hand *
forget not the poor.
14 Wherefore should the wicked blaspheme God *
while he doth say in his heart, Tush, thou God carest not for it.
15 Surely thou hast seen it *
for thou beholdest ungodliness and wrong.
16 That thou mayest take the matter into thine hand *
the poor committeth himself unto thee;
for thou art the helper of the friendless.
17 Break thou the power of the ungodly and malicious *
take away his ungodliness, and thou shalt find none.
18 The Lord is King for ever and ever *
and the heathen are perished out of the land.
19 Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the poor *
thou preparest their heart, and thine ear hearkeneth thereto;
20 To help the fatherless and poor unto their right *
that the man of the earth be no more exalted against them.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
Psalm 11 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/yboxkznx)
1 In the Lord put I my trust *
how say ye then to my soul,
that she should flee as a bird unto the hill?
2 For lo, the ungodly bend their bow,
and make ready their arrows within the quiver *
that they may privily shoot at them which are true of heart.
3 For the foundations will be cast down *
and what hath the righteous done?
4 The Lord is in his holy temple *
the Lord’s seat is in heaven.
5 His eyes consider the poor *
and his eye-lids try the children of men.
6 The Lord alloweth the righteous *
but the ungodly, and him that delighteth in wickedness
doth his soul abhor.
7 Upon the ungodly he shall rain snares,
fire and brimstone, storm and tempest *
this shall be their portion to drink.
8 For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness *
his countenance will behold the thing that is just.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
Psalm 9
(Gregorian Tone 3, Sing the Hours)
2 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; *
all your wonders I will confess.
3 I will rejoice in you and be glad, *
and sing psalms to your name, O Most High.
4 See how my enemies turn back, *
how they stumble and perish before you.
5 You upheld the justice of my cause; *
you sat enthroned, an upright judge.
6 You have rebuked the nations, destroyed the wicked; *
you have wiped out their names forever and ever.
7 The foe is destroyed eternally ruined. *
You uprooted their cities; their memory has perished.
8 But the LORD sits enthroned forever; *
he has set up his throne for judgement.
9 He will judge the world with righteousness; *
he will govern the peoples with equity.
10 For the oppressed, the LORD will be a stronghold, *
a stronghold in times of distress.
11 Those who know your name will trust you; *
you will not forsake those who seek you, O LORD.
12 Sing psalms to the LORD who dwells in Zion. *
Tell his mighty works among the peoples,
13 for the Avenger of Blood has remembered them *
has not forgotten the cry of the poor.
14 Have mercy on me, O LORD; *
see how I suffer from my foes,
you who raise me from the gates of death, *
15 that I may recount all your praise.
at the gates of daughter Zion, *
and rejoice in your salvation.
16 The nations have fallen in the pit which they have made; *
their feet have been caught in the snare they laid.
17 The LORD has revealed himself; he has given judgement. *
The wicked are snared by the work of their hands.
18 Let the wicked go down to Sheol, *
all the nations forgetful of God:
19 for the needy shall not always be forgotten, *
nor the hopes of the poor ever perish.
20 Arise O LORD, let human strength not prevail! *
Let the nations be judged before you.
21 Strike them with terror, O LORD; *
let the nations know they are but men.
Psalm 10
(Gregorian Tone 3g II, Sing the Hours)
1 Why, O Lord, do you stand afar off, *
and hide yourself in times of distress?
2 The poor are devoured by the pride of the wicked; *
they are caught in the schemes that others have made.
3 For the wicked boasts of his soulʼs desires; *
the covetous blasphemes and spurns the LORD.
4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him. *
All his thoughts are, “There is no God.”
5 His path is ever untroubled; *
your judgments are on high, far removed.
All those who oppose him, he derides. †
6 In his heart he thinks, “Never shall I falter; *
never shall misfortune be my lot.”
7 His mouth is full of cursing, guile, oppression; *
under his tongue are deceit and evil.
8 He sits in ambush in the villages; *
in hidden places, he murders the innocent.
The eyes of the wicked keep watch for the helpless. *
9 He lurks in hiding like a lion in his lair;
he lurks in hiding to seize the poor; *
he seizes the poor one and draws him to his snare.
10 He crouches, preparing to spring, *
and the helpless fall prey to his strength.
11 He says in his heart, “God forgets, *
he hides his face, never will he see.”
12 Arise, O LORD; lift up your hand, O God! *
Do not forget the poor!
13 Why should the wicked man spurn God, *
saying in his heart, “You will not call to account?”
14 But you have seen the trouble and sorrow. *
You note it; you take it in your hands.
The helpless one relies on you, *
for you are the helper of the orphan.
15 Break the arm of the wicked and the sinner! *
Pursue their wickedness till nothing remains!
16 The LORD is king forever and ever. *
The nations shall perish from his land.
17 O LORD, you have heard the desire of the poor. *
You strengthen their hearts; you turn your ear
18 to give right judgment for the orphan and oppressed, *
so that no one on earth may strike terror again.
Psalm 11 (Plainsong: http://oremus.org/chant/Psalm-11.mp3)
1 In the LORD have I taken refuge; *
how then can you say to me,
“Fly away like a bird to the hilltop;
2 For see how the wicked bend the bow
and fit their arrows to the string, *
to shoot from ambush at the true of heart.
3 When the foundations are being destroyed, *
what can the righteous do?”
4 The LORD is in his holy temple; *
the LORD’S throne is in heaven.
5 His eyes behold the inhabited world; *
his piercing eye weighs our worth.
6 The LORD weighs the righteous as well as the wicked, *
but those who delight in violence he abhors.
7 Upon the wicked he shall rain coals of fire and
burning sulphur; *
a scorching wind shall be their lot.
8 For the LORD is righteous;
he delights in righteous deeds; *
and the just shall see his face.
PRAYER
O God our refuge,
bring an end to violence among nations and peoples,
and shelter those who take refuge in you.
When the foundations are being shaken,
give us a sure confidence that you will uphold us
through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. BCW2018
THE WORD OF GOD
READING: Jeremiah 5:20-31
Declare this in the house of Jacob;
proclaim it in Judah:
Hear this, O foolish and senseless people,
who have eyes but do not see,
who have ears but do not hear.
Do you not fear me? says the Lord;
Do you not tremble before me?
I placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,
a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;
though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;
though they roar, they cannot pass over it.
But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart;
they have turned aside and gone away.
They do not say in their hearts,
“Let us fear the Lord our God,
who gives the rain in its season,
the autumn rain and the spring rain,
and keeps for us
the weeks appointed for the harvest.”
Your iniquities have turned these away,
and your sins have deprived you of good.
For the wicked are found among my people.
They lie in wait like hunters;
destroyers, they catch humans.
Like a cage full of birds,
their houses are full of treachery;
therefore they have become great and rich;
they have grown fat and sleek.
They know no limits in deeds of wickedness;
they do not judge with justice
the cause of the orphan, to make it prosper,
and they do not defend the rights of the needy.
Shall I not punish them for these things?
says the Lord,
and shall I not bring retribution
on a nation such as this?
An appalling and horrible thing
has happened in the land:
the prophets prophesy falsely,
and the priests rule as the prophets direct;
my people love to have it so,
but what will you do when the end comes?
HYMN: Paul Gerhardt; trans. John Wesley
Tune: St George https://tinyurl.com/f3zy7j5e
1 Commit thou all thy griefs
And ways into His hands,
To His sure truth and tender care,
Who earth and heaven commands.
2 Who points the clouds their course,
Whom winds and seas obey,
He shall direct thy wandering feet,
He shall prepare thy way.
3 Thou on the Lord rely,
So safe shalt thou go on;
Fix on His work thy steadfast eye,
So shall thy work be done.
4 No profit canst thou gain
By self-consuming care;
To Him commend thy cause, His ear
Attends the softest prayer.
5 Thy everlasting truth,
Father, Thy ceaseless love,
Sees all Thy children’s wants, and knows
What best for each will prove
READING: James 4:13-5:6
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.” Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it commits sin.
Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure during the last days. Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who does not resist you.
HYMN: Joachim Lange; trans. John Wesley
Tune: Eisenach https://tinyurl.com/yjv6nxwn
1 Jesus, Thy light again I view,
Again Thy mercy’s beams I see,
And all within me wakes anew
To share the joy of life in Thee;
Again my thoughts to Thee aspire
In fervent flames of strong desire.
2 But O what offering shall I give
To Thee, the Lord of earth and skies?
My soul and body now receive,
A holy, living sacrifice;
Small as it is, ‘tis all my store,
More shouldst Thou have if I had more.
3 Send down Thy likeness from above,
And let this my adorning be;
Clothe me with wisdom, patience, love,
With lowliness and purity,
Than gold and pearls more precious far,
And brighter than the morning star.
4 Lord, arm me with Thy Spirit’s might,
Since I am called by Thy great Name,
In Thee my wandering thoughts unite,
Of all my works be Thou the aim;
Thy love attend me all my days,
And my sole business be Thy praise.
READING: Mark 9:38-50
John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.
“If any of you cause one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
“For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
CANTICLE Philippians 2:6-11
(Chant by John Michael Talbot: https://tinyurl.com/y8ljx8y7)
Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not deem equality with God
something to be grasped at.
Rather, he emptied himself
and took the form of a slave,
being born in the likeness of men.
He was known to be of human estate
and it was thus that he humbled himself,
obediently accepting even death,
death on a cross!
Because of this,
God highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
above every other name,
So that at Jesus’ name
every knee must bend
in the heavens, on the earth,
and under the earth,
and every tongue proclaim
to the glory of God the Father:
JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
God of mercy,
who inspired John Wesley with zeal for your gospel:
grant to all people boldness to proclaim your word
and a heart ever to rejoice in singing your praises;
