Psalm 28

Spiritus Vitae 9.8.9.8. (Mary Jane Hammond, 1878-1964)

1 O LORD my Rock, in desperation
I plead for you to hear my cry.
For if you should remain in silence,
I know that I would surely die.

2 I cry, O LORD, for help and mercy;
I lift my pleading hands in prayer.
3 LORD, do not drag me off with sinners
while wicked people stand and stare.

They act so friendly to their neighbors
but harbor malice in their heart.
4 LORD, punish them for spite and outrage,
and set their evil lives apart.

5 Because they disregard God’s doings,
and all his justice they despise,
our LORD will cast them down in anger
and he will never let them rise.

6 O praise our God, the LORD eternal;
he heard my cry and turned to me.
7 He is my strength, my shield and helper;
in him my joy will always be.

8 God is the strength of his anointed,
a fortress to the ones he chose.
9 As shepherd, save and bless your people;
keep them secure from all their foes.
