Psalm 4

Cheshire C.M. (The Whole Booke of Psalmes, Thomas Este, 1592)

1 LORD, hear me when I call to you;
relieve my agony.
You are a true and righteous God:
be merciful to me.

2 You people, why persist in lies,
in trampling on God’s name?
How long will you seek worthless gods
that bring despair and shame?

3 Know that the LORD has set apart
the godly as his heirs;
I know that when I call on him,
the LORD will hear my prayers.

4 In anger do not sin, but think
on all that God has done.
5 Offer to God your sacrifice
and trust the Holy One.

6 Though many others ask in doubt,
“Who shows us any good?”
we pray with fervor, “Let your face
shine over us, O LORD.”

7 You fill my heart with joy beyond
when wine and grain increase.
8 Since you alone have kept me safe,
I can lie down in peace.
