Psalm 59

Old 107th C.M.D. (Lyons Psalter, 1547; arr. Louis Bourgeois, 1510-1561)

1 O save me from my foes, my God,
from those who against me come,
2 from evil workers rescue me,
from those who seek my blood.
3 See how they lie in wait for me,
who fiercely stir up strife.
4 For no transgression of my own,
O LORD, they seek my life.

Awake and come to meet me now!
5 LORD God of hosts, arise;
spare not, O God of Israel,
the nations who conspire.
6 At evening they return again;
like dogs, they snarl and prowl.
7 Oh the sharp words they bellow forth:
“Who then will hear us howl?”

8 But you, O LORD, will laugh at them;
those nations you deride.
9 I watch for you, O God, my strength,
my fortress where I hide.
10 The God who shows me steadfast love
will meet me in his grace,
and he will let me look upon
my vanquished rivals’ face.

11 But don’t kill them, lest we forget,
O Lord, our shield and guide.
Let all their worlds come crashing down;
defeat them by your might.
12 Reward the evil of their lips,
the sin of their own mouths;
let them be trapped by unjust pride,
their curses and untruths.

13 Consume them till they are no more;
consume them in your wrath,
until they know that Jacob’s God
is ruler o’er the earth.
14 At evening they return again;
like dogs, they snarl and prowl.
15 They roam about the town for food,
and, finding none, they growl.

16 But in the morning I will praise
your strength and loving care,
because you are my strong defense,
my refuge from despair.
17 O God, my strength, I sing to you
and offer you my praise,
for you, O God, my fortress,
show me steadfast love and grace.
