Psalm 87

Shipston 8.7.8.7 (John Alexander Fulton Maitland’s English Country Songs, 1893, harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958)

1 Zion, founded on the mountain,
God, your maker, loves you well.
2 More than all of Jacob’s dwellings
God delights in you to dwell.

3 Glorious things of you are spoken,
Zion, city of the LORD:
Your renown is celebrated
by nations around the world.

4 “I’ll record all those who know me:
Rahab, Babylon, and Tyre,
people of all tribes and nations
will come and join the choir.”

5 Yes, it will be said of Zion,
“This and that one here belong;
upon it the Highest’s blessing
will descend, and make it strong.”

6 The Most High will make this decree:
“In my register I’ll count
people of all tribes and nations
as born on Zion’s holy mount.”

7 They will come from all earth’s corners,
sing to God who keeps them strong.
“Zion, all my springs are in you!”
shall be their continual song.
