Psalm 42
1 As the deer pants for the waters,
so I long for you, O LORD.
2 For my God my soul is thirsty,
thirsting for the living God.
When shall I behold God’s face
in his holy dwelling place?
3 Now I feed on tears from weeping,
while they say, “Is your God sleeping?”
4 In my grief I still remember
how I led the happy throng
to the house of God for feasting,
filled with shouts and joyful songs.
5 O my soul, why so cast down?
Why so troubled in me now?
Hope in God, for I shall praise him;
he’s my God and my salvation.
6 When my heart despairs within me,
then will I recall once more,
as the headwaters of Jordan
from the Mount of Herman pour.
7 Deep to deep roars out its sound,
waves and rapids surging round.
8 In the day God’s love comes freely,
and at night his song is with me.
9 Then to God, my rock, I plead:
Why have you forgotten me?
10 As a blow that breaks my body,
all my foes are taunting me.
11 O my soul, why so cast down?
Why so troubled in me now?

1 O my God, bring vindication
and defend my worthy cause
From the godless and deceitful
who defy your holy laws.
2 For you are my refuge strong;
Why now let them do me wrong?
Why must I continue grieving
While my foes keep on deceiving?
3 Send your light and truth to guide me
to your holy dwelling place.
4 Then will I approach your altar,
singing songs of joyful praise.
5 O my soul, why so cast down?
