Christ Blessing the Children, Nicolae Maes, 1652

Antiphon1

Ant. Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand on high;
and behold the joy that shall come to you from your God.
V. O Jerusalem, glorify the Lord! *
O Sion, praise your God!
He has strengthened the bars of your gates; *
he has blessed your children within you.
He established peace on your borders; *
he gives you your fill of finest wheat. Baruch 5; Psalm 147

Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires, known,
and from whom no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth will declare your praise.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to you, O Christ, Alleluia!

HYMN: Frederick William Faber
Tune: St Peter https://tinyurl.com/y9fnquac

1 Oh, see how Jesus trusts himself
Unto our childish love,
As though by his free ways with us
Our earnestness to prove.

2 His sacred name a common word
On earth he loves to hear;
There is no majesty in him
Which love may not come near.

3 The light of love is round his feet,
His paths are never dim;
And he comes nigh to us when we
Dare not come nigh to him.

4 Let us be simple with him, then,
Not backward, stiff, nor cold,
As though our Bethlehem could be
What Sinai was of old.

Psalm 110 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/wo7aol8)

1  The Lord said unto my Lord *
 Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
2  The Lord shall send the rod of thy power out of Sion *
 be thou ruler, even in the midst among thine enemies.
3  In the day of thy power shall the people offer thee
free-will offerings with an holy worship *
 the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning.
4  The Lord sware, and will not repent *
 Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech.
5  The Lord upon thy right hand *
 shall wound even kings in the day of his wrath.
6  He shall judge among the heathen; he shall fill the places with the dead bodies *
 and smite in sunder the heads over divers countries.
7  He shall drink of the brook in the way *
 therefore shall he lift up his head.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 111 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/vddmean)

1  I will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart *
 secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation.
2  The works of the Lord are great *
 sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3  His work is worthy to be praised, and had in honour *
 and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4  The merciful and gracious Lord hath so done his marvellous works *
 that they ought to be had in remembrance.
5  He hath given meat unto them that fear him *
 he shall ever be mindful of his covenant.
6  He hath shewed his people the power of his works *
 that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7  The works of his hands are verity and judgement *
 all his commandments are true.
8  They stand fast for ever and ever *
 and are done in truth and equity.
9  He sent redemption unto his people *
 he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his Name.
10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom *
 a good understanding have all they that do thereafter;
the praise of it endureth for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 112 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/yxyhobau)

1  Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord *
 he hath great delight in his commandments.
2  His seed shall be mighty upon earth *
 the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.
3  Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house *
 and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4  Unto the godly there ariseth up light in the darkness *
 he is merciful, loving, and righteous.
5  A good man is merciful, and lendeth *
 and will guide his words with discretion.
6  For he shall never be moved *
 and the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.
7  He will not be afraid of any evil tidings *
 for his heart standeth fast, and believeth in the Lord.
8  His heart is established, and will not shrink *
 until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9  He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor *
 and his righteousness remaineth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10  The ungodly shall see it, and it shall grieve him *
 he shall gnash with his teeth, and consume away;
the desire of the ungodly shall perish.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

Psalm 113 (Anglican Chant: https://tinyurl.com/s3ye4cx)

1  Praise the Lord, ye servants *
 O praise the Name of the Lord.
2  Blessed be the Name of the Lord *
 from this time forth for evermore.
3  The Lord’s Name is praised *
 from the rising up of the sun unto the going down of the same.
4  The Lord is high above all heathen *
 and his glory above the heavens.
5  Who is like unto the Lord our God that hath his dwelling so high *
 and yet humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?
6  He taketh up the simple out of the dust *
 and lifteth the poor out of the mire;
7  That he may set him with the princes *
 even with the princes of his people.
8  He maketh the barren woman to keep house *
 and to be a joyful mother of children.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

PRAYER

Sovereign God,

and reveal the poverty of wealth.
Help us to praise your name in all times and places,
that we may be faithful servants
of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BCW

THE WORD OF GOD

Reading: Numbers 11:18-23, 31-32

Say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wailed in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “If only we had meat to eat! Surely it was better for us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. You shall eat not only one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you—because you have rejected the Lord who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?” ’ But Moses said, ‘The people I am with number six hundred thousand on foot; and you say, “I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month”! Are there enough flocks and herds to slaughter for them? Are there enough fish in the sea to catch for them?’ The Lord said to Moses, ‘Is the Lord’s power limited? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.’

Then a wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quails from the sea and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, about two cubits deep on the ground. So the people worked all that day and night and all the next day, gathering the quails; the least anyone gathered was ten homers; and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp.

HYMN: William Augustus Muhlenberg
Tune: Brocklesbury https://tinyurl.com/y39lfzeo

1 Savior, who Thy flock art feeding
With the shepherd’s kindest care,
All the feeble gently leading,
While the lambs Thy bosom share.

2 Now, these little ones receiving,
Fold them in Thy gracious arm;
There we know, Thy word believing,
Only there secure from harm.

3 Never, from Thy pasture roving
Let them be the lion’s prey;
Let Thy tenderness, so loving,
Keep them thro’ life’s dangerous way.

4 Then, within Thy fold eternal,
Let them find a resting-place,
Feed in pastures ever vernal
Drink the rivers of Thy grace.

Reading: Matthew 18:1-5

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’

CANTICLE Isaiah 55:6-11
(Setting by Gregory Wilbur: https://tinyurl.com/yawmg8fp)

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
Call ye upon him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts:

And let him return unto the Lord,
and he will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth,
My ways and thoughts are higher than yours.

And let him return unto the Lord,
and he will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

For as the rain cometh down, and snow from heaven,
And maketh it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to sow,
that it may give bread to eat.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:
It shall not return unto me void,
but it shall accomplish that which I please it shall prosper
in the thing whereunto I sent it.
