THE WORD OF GOD
Listen to me,
you who look for righteousness,
you who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry where you were dug.
Look to Abraham your ancestor,
and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
They were alone when I called them,
but I blessed them and made them many.
The Lord will comfort Zion;
he will comfort all her ruins.
He will make her desert like Eden
and her wilderness like the Lord’s garden.
Happiness and joy will be found in her—
thanks and the sound of singing.
Pay attention to me, my people;
listen to me, my nation,

So, brothers and sisters, because of God’s mercies, I encourage you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to God. This is your appropriate priestly service. Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature.
Because of the grace that God gave me, I can say to each one of you: don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think. Instead, be reasonable since God has measured out a portion of faith to each one of you. We have many parts in one body, but the parts don’t all have the same function. In the same way, though there are many of us, we are one body in Christ, and individually we belong to each other. We have different gifts that are consistent with God’s grace that has been given to us. If your gift is prophecy, you should prophesy in proportion to your faith. If your gift is service, devote yourself to serving. If your gift is teaching, devote yourself to teaching. If your gift is encouragement, devote yourself to encouraging. The one giving should do it with no strings attached. The leader should lead with passion. The one showing mercy should be cheerful.

For the Church: that we may boldly profess in word and deed that Jesus is Lord and help others to come to know and follow him
For the grace of awe: that we may recognize the great love and generosity that God has for us and share more fully in the life of the Trinity each day
For the grace to be free: that we may trust God’s providence and not be trapped by our plans, dreams, or visions
For all who follow Jesus: that Christ will unite us in witnessing to the Gospel, in better understanding of each other, and in working together in helping those who are suffering
For all who exercise authority whether in religion, business, education, or government: that they may recognize God as the source of all authority and use their power for promoting justice and the common good
For all who are beginning a new academic year: that students and teachers may learn together as they grow in wisdom and as persons and that God will protect them from harm and disease
For a deep appreciation of the beauty and dignity of life: that the wisdom and knowledge of God may open our minds and hearts to honor and respect life especially in the aged, the disabled, and the mentally ill
For all who are searching for the keys to new life: that God will help those who feel bound by addiction or destructive habits to recognize Christ as the key that will liberate them
For all who are recovering from disasters, particularly the people of Hawaii: that God will relieve their pain, give them strength of spirit, and speed the assistance that they need
For greater stewardship of the earth: that our hearts may be moved as we behold the wondrous work of God in nature and that we may care for it so that future generations may see God’s work
For healing in cities and neighborhoods: that God will guide leaders in addressing issues of racism, discrimination, and injustice in our communities, turn hearts from violence, and open pathways that will lead to reconciliation
For all who are discerning God’s call in their life: that they may recognize the promptings of the Spirit and be open to how they can best love and serve in their life commitments
For all who have been rejected by the family: that they may experience God’s loving acceptance and be welcomed by our faith community
For all who are in abusive situations: that God will guide them to freedom and wholeness where they can heal and be renewed
